HP Extending Thin Client, Virtualization Concepts to BYOD

Best in UC_1900 switch series

How can small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs) create an IT infrastructure that supports mobility, without creating serious security challenges? That’s a question plaguing thousands of companies, as they work to balance the need for customer responsiveness and collaboration with the imperative of protecting corporate data and applications. According to Gartner research, by 2016, at least 50 percent of business email users will rely primarily on a tablet or mobile client instead of a traditional desktop. The trend to use devices to access email and other business data requires SMBs to prepare their infrastructures to support increased mobility. Hewlett-Packard is the most recent vendor to offer a solution to this challenge, in part by extending the thin client and virtualization concepts relied upon by IT infrastructure experts for more than a decade. With more than 1.1 billion mobile appliances in use worldwide, organizations of all sizes are challenged by the need to access,…Read More

State Telework Study Boasts Benefits of Mobility

Best in UC-telework

What would happen if more than one-fifth of American employees were able to telework? While it’s hard to know what such a massive adoption of teleworking would look like in the nation as a whole, the state of Minnesota can offer many observations about teleworking in the microcosm of one state. With technological advances and improving prices for unified communications, video conferencing and other collaboration technologies, more businesses than ever stand to gain financially by establishing a telework policy. According to Connect Minnesota, 22 percent of those employed in the state telework. In Minnesota, teleworking has the biggest impact in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area. In a year, the average commuter in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area spends 225 hours, or nine days, traveling to and from work. A reduction of this time spent traveling can make a major difference in an employee’s personal life. Teleworking can also help Minnesota…Read More

Voice Bio-metrics Enhance Mobility, Unified Messaging for Professionals

Best In UC_headset

For professionals who rely on mobility solutions and unified messaging, continual improvements in productivity are key. That’s why several companies are working to develop voice bio-metrics, which can enhance security of mobile devices while also driving efficiency while on the go. Typical consumers already have experienced some degree of voice recognition technology with Siri, the virtual assistant included with the iPhone 4. But true voice biometrics go much further, enabling companies to protect data of their mobile devices by locking them down. Consider Sensory, which provides speaker verification for the company’s TrulyHandsfree voice recognition and activation products. The text-dependent speaker verification technology creates a unique voiceprint for users, allowing a voice wake-up word to be spoken that both activates the device and verifies the user’s identity all in a single command. For mobile devices (smart phones, tablets, etc.) combining voice activation and speaker verification allows the right user to access voice control functions,…Read More

Collaboration, Mobility Key for Mid-Market CEO’s

Best In UC_Collaboration

Nearly twice as many CEOs of mid-market companies view the creation of a more collaborative work environment as a top priority, compared with just two years ago. This is according to a new IBM global study of midmarket chief executive officers (CEOs), which shows that 45 percent of midmarket CEOs see a need to create a more open business environment – a 50 percent jump from two years ago. This shows a tremendous need for effective unified communications solutions, which enhance both collaboration and openness in the workplace. Mobility is also elevating customer expectations and creating new challenges for CEOs.  Midmarket clients have a tremendous opportunity to create value out of immediacy to be ready with relevant services and information in the context of the moment. Mobilisafe Helps IT Deal with BYOD Risks

BestInUC_mobilisafe

Just when IT departments and chief executives seemed ready to embrace bring-your-own-device (BYOD) and employee mobility, the threat of security breaches reared its ugly head. To deal with this, Mobilisafe has launched a service that provides mobile security, including real-time vulnerability management that is easy to use, cloud-based, agent less and affordable. “I knew that I had a lot of insecure mobile devices connecting to my network, but until I installed Mobilisafe I really had no idea how vulnerable our company data was,” said Austin Biery, director of IT for WinShuttle. “I was initially reluctant to tackle this issue, since most solutions require me to install agents on every mobile device connecting to the network which introduces serious employee privacy concerns. Mobilisafe enabled me to avoid these employee pitfalls with a non-invasive model.” Mobilisafe, which is backed by blue-chip investors Madrona Venture Group, Trilogy Equity Partners and T-Venture, uses proprietary…Read More

VoIP Equipment Sales on The Rise as Deployments Increase

Voice over IP deployments are increasingly becoming the rule, rather than the exception. That’s the trend that seems to be indicated by Infonetics Research, which tracks spending by telephone service providers on VoIP and IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) equipment. “In the first quarter of 2012, we saw the largest order of IMS core equipment and application server licenses on record, secured by Alcatel-Lucent, “said Diane Myers, principal analyst for VoIP and IMS at Infonetics. This is “a clear sign that operators in North America are gearing up for voice over LTE (VoLTE) deployments. “While commercial VoLTE services have yet to launch, this is a taste of what is to come as operators push forward over the next 5-plus years. That said, large equipment orders will be sporadic. And the IMS market will continue to be lumpy,” Myers added. Thanks to exceptionally strong IMS equipment spending, the overall service provider VoIP…Read More

5 ways to secure the network from BYOD threats

criminal

Cybercriminals are setting their sites on new targets in 2012. The upcoming New Year will see cycbercriminals act with more persistency and sophistication, focusing on mobile and cloud computing, according to Trend Micro and its 12 Threat Predictions for 2012. The report points out that: The real challenge for data center owners will be the increasing complexities of security physical, virtual and cloud-based systems. Security vulnerabilities will be found in legitimate mobile apps, making data extraction easier for criminals. More hacker groups will pose a bigger threat to organizations that protect highly sensitive data. First and foremost for most organizations, however, is the prediction that security and data breach incidents will force companies to face bring-your-own-device (BYOD) challenges. Why? Most of the mobile devices consumers choose do not have the kinds of intensive security and management controls that IT pros need to protect a business. So if your employees want…Read More
